The U.S. Treasury's 30-Year Bond

The long bond, as it is commonly known, had been considered the "benchmark" for long-term interest rates beginning in 1978 when they were first issued. The 10-year Treasury Note replaced the long bond as the "benchmark" instrument in 2000 because the Treasury Department is retiring many of these instruments and no longer issues newer ones.
